Once again, W1REX is hosting the Buildathon session at the QRP-ARCI Four Days in May event. Last year was pandemonium as 40 builders crammed into the Buildathon room to build the SOLDERMAN kit and get some helpful kit building tips from more than a dozen experienced builders. A fun time was had by all! Once again, we will try to hold the Buildathon during the time between the presentations and the social event on Thursday evening, so the intended time is 4:00PM to approximately 8:00PM. Just like last year, the Buildathon will start off with a pizza party so we won't miss out on our supper. The pizza party is included in the Buildathon price.
The Buildathon experience this year will be very interesting. The first item on the agenda will be to examine the innards of a typical amateur radio crystal. I will have specially made 10.118Mhz HC49 crystals in unsealed cans, We will be looking at the insides and then 'penning' the crystals down a bit to hopefully 40 unique frequencies. Once that is done, we will be building low powered beacon transmitters.
** Dale Botkin, N0XAS, of Ham Gadgets has provided FREE Picokeyer chips to install in the 'Beaconator' kits. YThe Picokeyer chip can be set up as a beacon keyer OR as paddle/straight key input mode allowing the 'Beaconator' to be used as a QRPp transmitter.
Once these two items are married up, we should have 40 transmitters scattered throughout the hotel (and local vicinity) beacon-ing away for some fun LX contesting throughout the rest of the FDIM weekend. And of course; you can use them at you own QTHs for more beacon shenanigans. Don't forget to pack your toolbox and be ready to build...... and have a great time!

It takes more than 1 person to hold a workshop! Last year, I had lots of help from a bunch of wonderful volunteers to help the builders get their kits built and I hope to have excellent volunteers again this year! If you would like to help please send me an email.
